Creativity, towards a happy mix?
24.02.2020

Let's go back in time together, to the 60s and 70s. It is the rise of Flower Power and of the movement of unaligned. The world is in turmoil, and life is a promise.

In the company too, there is a double liberation movement :

  • On the one hand, we discover new ways of working to solve problems together, with the creativity And the group dynamics
  • On the other hand, we are witnessing the rise of feminist concerns

And you know what? It is no coincidence that Feminism and Creativity emerging at the same time.

Attention: we will not play the stereotype game here. Pseudo studies that want to show that a woman is more imaginative than a man, or that a man is more visionary than a woman, do not contribute much.

In fact, the An individual's creativity depends primarily on their state of mind. So the only right question is whether or not individuals, men and women, evolve in a environment favorable to their creativity.

1. Ordinary corporate misogyny: 25 centuries of stereotypes

Here is a quick review of The most persistent misconceptions.
To read: History of Misogyny: From Antiquity to the Present
Adeline Gargam and Bertrand Lançon, 2013.

Women are less...

  • VISIONARIES : they project themselves closer than men
  • DARING : more introverted, they would tend to disappear
  • GIFTED : few great artists would be women, in music or in painting

Women are more...

  • PRAGMATICS : they would have the intuition and common sense of the mother of the family
  • SENSITIVE : whimsical, imaginative and often very emotional

These cliches last a long time. And they are not neutral.

2. An anti-creative glass ceiling

These stereotypes that are rampant in business are major obstacles to creativity.

First, a simple fact: in 2017, the CAC 40 executive committees remained at 85% male. So men and women are still a long way from sharing power.

Then, a woman who makes a name for herself in a male environment may tend to Self-censor by curbing its creative side.

Finally, it is often men who censor women.

Do you know the Manterrupting ?
In meetings, a woman is on average interrupted 2.6 times more often only a man.

This is particularly anti-creative.

So let's think: how can we change things simply?

3. Creativity, towards a happy mix

In praise of diversity

It's proven: the joint working groups, combining women and men, are also the more efficient.
Schruijer and Mostert, 1997.

Hubert Jaoui, a precursor of creativity in France, believes that the creativity of mixed groups is 30 to 40% higher.

Creativity at the service of sharing power

How can creativity make things easier?

Because it promotes assertiveness

Creativity helps you build with others while being yourself. She feeds the Self-confidence, necessary for the conquest of power.

Because it frees up spaces for expression

The number 1 rule in creativity: Listen and don't judge.

In a creativity workshop, there should therefore be no problem with manterrupting.

As we recall, 100% female creativity groups are, necessarily less effective than mixed groups. However, for those who wish to do so, they can offer a free or protected space for expression.

Because it is inclusive

Creativity methods make it possible to Bringing women and men together.

And let's never forget that 1 + 1 = 3.

4. Two managerial innovations for women

The 15:40 strike

To raise awareness about wage inequalities, what better way than deprive the company of gender diversity for a few hours ?

The symbolic strikes consisting of women stopping work at 15:40 invite us to reflect, in their absence, and perhaps to do otherwise.

Against manterrupting, the megaphone technique

The women of the Obama administration realized that they were facing the phenomenon of manterrupting.

To make things happen, they set up a megaphone system aimed at amplifying their messages.

In meetings, when an idea was put forward by one of them, the others amplified this idea by quoting it and quoting the author.

For example:
“As Hillary just said, we could...”

A simple and effective technique, at the service of diversity of ideas.

To conclude

The key is undoubtedly there: let's be creative and creative to build together a happy mix.
